Golden Week, the early-October holiday rush when millions of Chinese travellers head abroad, has become a fixture on Maldivian resort calendars — and Sun Siyam is leaning into it. From 1 to 7 October 2026, two of its Privé Collection islands, Sun Siyam Iru Veli in Dhaalu Atoll and Sun Siyam Vilu Reef, will each run a seven-day programme built around Chinese-inspired dining, wellbeing and time on the water.
The two islands take different approaches. Iru Veli is going big on the table: hotpot experiences and Chinese-inspired menus, plus lantern-lit beach dinners with live entertainment. Maldivian flavours run through the week as well, so the celebration stays rooted in the destination rather than feeling transplanted. The Ocean Spa adds a herbal rejuvenation package, kids get their own cultural activities at the Turtle Kidz Club, and the atoll's waters supply the adrenaline — whale shark trips, scuba diving, flyboarding and extended Jet Car rides.
Vilu Reef swaps hotpot for live-cooking stations and seafood barbecues on the sand. Its standout is Golden Catch & Grill, where guests fish in the morning and eat their catch cooked island-style the same day. There are wellness rituals at the spa, family movie nights by the sea, guided Seabob runs, beginner scuba sessions and sunset Jet Car rides timed to the golden hour.
Both programmes are clearly aimed at the Golden Week crowd — couples and families from China with a week to spend — but the bones of it work for anyone travelling in early October: shared meals, spa time and reef excursions are a decent template for any island stay. It's also a signal of where Maldivian resorts are heading generally, tailoring food and entertainment calendars to their biggest source markets rather than offering a generic resort experience.
For travellers considering either island, the practical pitch is simple: Iru Veli suits those who want a food-led, slightly livelier week with strong kids' facilities, while Vilu Reef skews more ocean-adventure and family cinema nights. Both sit within reach of the Dhaalu/Nilandhe atoll area, a short seaplane hop from Malé.
If your own travel dates don't align with Golden Week, it's worth noting that Maldivian resorts increasingly run themed seasons — Sun Siyam's own properties are also adding Halloween programming and solo-traveller wellness months elsewhere in the group — so checking a resort's events calendar before booking can noticeably change what you get for your money.
