Tampa's riverfront is about to gain a serious anchor. In 2027, Hotel Cala opens along the city's Riverwalk, bringing 281 rooms and a full resort-style setup to the banks of the Hillsborough River. The building is a major transformation of an existing property rather than a from-scratch build, with Newbond Holdings founding partner Neil Luthra framing the goal simply: create something that feels distinctly Tampa.
The design leans contemporary with a tropical streak, mixing custom furnishings with nods to the city's Italian and Cuban heritage — a fitting combination for a city with Ybor City's Cuban-Spanish history and a long Italian-American community. The centerpiece is a circular central space billed as "Tampa's Living Room": floor-to-ceiling arched windows, plenty of natural light, and a layout meant to shift with the day, from morning coffee to an evening lounge scene. It connects directly to the main dining venues and a pool deck, so the social core of the hotel doubles as its practical hub.
Food is a headline act here. LAVO, the Italian restaurant brand from Tao Group Hospitality, makes its Tampa debut on-site, bringing the upscale pasta-and-steak formula it's known for in New York and Las Vegas. Alongside it, BarOnda goes for something more relaxed — cocktails and casual bites with waterfront views. Tao Group co-CEO Noah Tepperberg has emphasized spaces that work for locals as much as visitors, which matters: hotels that draw a neighborhood crowd tend to have better energy after dark than those relying purely on tourists.
For travellers, the practical appeal is location. Tampa's Riverwalk is the city's best walking corridor, threading roughly 2.6 miles past museums, parks, bars and restaurants along the water. A new 281-room resort plugged directly into it puts guests within strolling distance of the Tampa Museum of Art, the Florida Aquarium area, and the bars of downtown and Channelside, with Ybor City a short ride away. It also strengthens the case for Tampa as more than a layover on the way to Orlando's theme parks or the beaches of St. Pete and Clearwater — the city now has a flagship property worth building a trip around.
Worth noting for planners: this is a 2027 opening, so it's one for the watchlist rather than this year's booking. If you're heading to Tampa before then, the Riverwalk hotel scene is already solid, but Hotel Cala looks set to become the new standard-bearer once doors open.
