Roatán is quietly becoming one of the Caribbean's busier hotel stories. The latest news: Spanish group Meliá Hotels International has signed Meliá Roatán, a new oceanfront resort on the Honduran island slated for 2029, with 350 rooms and suites plus 145 branded residences.

The flagship-brand project will feature a beach club, several restaurants, a spa and wellness facilities, retail and meeting and event space. Plans call for terraced, tropical-style buildings with gardens and open interiors that connect indoor and outdoor areas to the coast. It's not yet confirmed as all-inclusive, and details like restaurant names and room categories are still under wraps.

This isn't Meliá's first move on the island. Media Luna Resort & Beach Club joined the network under the Affiliated by Meliá banner less than a year ago and is set to be rebranded as Sol Roatán — an all-inclusive property with a private bay and bungalow-style rooms. The new build is a different play: an entirely new development under the main Meliá brand, moving ahead with entrepreneur Piero Dibattista as a key partner.

Meliá's arrival fits a wider pattern. Kimpton Grand Roatán Resort & Spa opened on West Bay Beach in 2023 with 119 rooms, four restaurants and bars and a spa, plugging the island into IHG's loyalty programme. That resort just added Bêyabu Rooftop, an open-air venue overlooking West Bay and the reef that hosts events for up to 80 guests. WorldHotels recently brought Acqua di Mare Resort, a 38-room, 36-suite property near West Bay Beach, into its reservation network. And Karisma's planned Margaritaville Island Reserve Resort Roatán, an all-inclusive, is targeting 2027.

For travellers, the takeaway is that Roatán's accommodation mix is broadening fast. The island has long drawn divers and snorkellers to its reef — part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — but options increasingly span small dive lodges, independents and now big international brands. If you like booking on points or trust a familiar flag, your choices on this Caribbean island are about to get a lot better. Meliá Roatán is a few years out, but the Margaritaville project in 2027 and Kimpton's recent expansion mean there's plenty happening even before it opens.
