If you sit on a pile of credit card points, October is a decent month to convert them. Several major transferable-currency programs are running limited-time bonuses to airline and hotel partners, with the standout being Chase Ultimate Rewards' 70% bonus to Marriott Bonvoy, live through Oct. 15. That means 1,000 Chase points become 1,700 Marriott points — a rare ratio worth acting on quickly if a hotel redemption is already in your sights.
American Express Membership Rewards holders have three options: 30% to Hilton Honors until Oct. 14 (1,000 points become 2,600), 25% to Air France-KLM Flying Blue and 20% to Aeromexico Rewards, both through Oct. 31. Citi ThankYou Rewards is running a 30% bonus to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank and 25% to Avianca Lifemiles until Oct. 24 — but note the catch. You only get the full transfer ratio if you hold a premium Citi card like the Strata Elite or Strata Premier; with most other Citi cards the effective bonus is smaller.
Capital One has a single offer this month: 20% to British Airways Club through Oct. 31, turning 1,000 miles into 1,200 Avios. Since most Capital One transfers are instant, that's handy for snagging short-haul Avios redemptions before availability disappears.
The newer name in the mix is Rove, a rewards program that doesn't require a credit card — you earn miles by booking hotels and flights and shopping through its portal. It's offering three October bonuses: 50% to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank, 40% to Flying Blue and a tiered bonus to Qatar Airways Privilege Club that scales from 15% to 35% depending on how many miles you move (100,000 or more unlocks the top rate). New members can even pick up 1,500 free miles just for signing up. Rove now connects to more than 20 programs, including Aeroplan, Qantas and Virgin Atlantic.
One firm rule from the folks tracking these deals: only transfer when you're ready to book. Transfers are irreversible, award space can vanish overnight, and the whole appeal of flexible points is that you're not locked into one program. Verify availability first, then move the miles. Also worth remembering that bonuses are occasionally targeted, so an offer you see listed may not appear in your own account.
For travellers, the practical takeaway is simple. If you've been eyeing a Marriott hotel stay, a business-class seat on JAL, or Avios flights around Europe, October's bonuses let you stretch the same points noticeably further — sometimes by half again or more. The deadlines are tight (the Chase-Marriott deal ends Oct. 15), so check your balances and target redemptions now rather than waiting for the end of the month.
