Tramped plans for one of New Zealand's Great Walks just hit a snag. The rebuilt Oturere Hut and its adjoining campsite on the Tongariro Northern Circuit will not open for bookings until 18 December 2026, after poor weather stopped contractors flying construction materials into the site.
The hut sits on the eastern side of the Tongariro massif, in a stark, lunar-like landscape of lava flows and scoria below Mount Ngauruhoe. It's a key overnight stop on the 43km Northern Circuit, one of the Department of Conservation's flagship multi-day tramps, which loops off the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing and passes the Emerald Lakes, Oturere Valley and Waihohonu Hut.
Rebuilds of this kind rely on helicopter lifts to get timber, roofing and gear into remote terrain, and the Central North Plateau's notoriously fickle conditions have grounded those flights long enough to push the opening back. DOC says affected hikers will be contacted directly by email, with the option to shift their booking or claim a full refund — so if you had a spot secured, watch your inbox before assuming anything.
The wider picture is less gloomy: the rest of the circuit remains on track for reopening, meaning the trail itself is coming back into service even while the Oturere overnight options wait a bit longer. For the 2026-27 summer season and beyond, trampers should be able to book both the hut and campsite as part of the full three-to-four-day loop again.
For travellers, the practical takeaway is timing. Anyone hoping to walk the full circuit in the 2025-26 season will need to plan around the Oturere gap — that could mean booking alternative huts where possible, walking sections rather than the whole loop, or simply holding off until the 2026-27 summer when everything is meant to be operational. Tongariro is a dual World Heritage area with an active volcanic heart, and demand for Great Walks beds is fierce; bookings typically open months ahead and popular summer dates sell out quickly.
If you already hold a booking that's affected, don't rebook separately and hope for the best — wait for DOC's email so you can change or refund without losing money. And if you're flexible, the shoulder months of late spring and early autumn still offer solid walking weather with fewer crowds, once the trail network is fully open.
