Johor Bahru has no shortage of budget hotels for Singaporeans making the weekend dash across the Causeway, but a new opening is betting that travellers want more personality for their money. KoHo TAR Hotel, which opened in September 2026, is a small boutique property decked out in old-school American diner style — think murals of a retro orange car, cartoon windows, a milkshake bar design on the first floor, and checkered wallpaper inside the rooms. The team behind it says the aim is to be the first themed hotel in JB, a deliberate break from the sleek minimalism that dominates the budget hotel scene.

Rates are the other selling point. Walk-in prices start around RM140 a night (roughly S$43.70 at the current exchange rate of about S$1 to RM3.20), but booking online through Agoda or Booking.com gets you in cheaper — listings have shown rates from S$39 to S$56 depending on the room and date. For a fun overnight stay, that leaves plenty of budget for what JB does best: food, malls and cafe-hopping.

Don't expect big-hotel frills. There's no pool or room service, and the property is compact. But the rooms cover the essentials well: air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, private bathrooms, kettles, toiletries and hairdryers. Early guests have praised the spacious layouts, comfortable beds, strong aircon and thoughtfully placed charging sockets — the little things that matter on a one-night trip.

Room options are genuinely varied for a budget property. The Deluxe Family and Deluxe Quadruple rooms sleep four adults with two double beds, while Family Rooms and Family Triples take three with a mix of single and double or queen beds. Couples and friends can pick from Standard Doubles (windowless, cheapest), Deluxe Doubles, Twins or the Deluxe Single with two single beds. That flexibility makes it work for a couple's escape, a group of friends on a food crawl, or a small family.

Location-wise, the hotel sits about 3.5km from JB Sentral, so you're not far after clearing immigration. Getting there from Singapore is straightforward: take cross-border bus 160, 170X or 950 through Woodlands Checkpoint to JB Sentral, then a Grab of five to 10 minutes to the hotel. Drivers can come straight over the Causeway, though parking at the property is limited. One thing to note: reaching JB's major shopping malls means a short drive or Grab ride, so plan your day around it.

If your usual JB hotel routine has gone stale, this is a cheap way to shake it up — a quirky, photogenic base that costs about the same as a decent hawker feast for two.
