Central Park in San Pedro Town glowed on Friday, October 2nd, as more than 50 runners of all ages took to the streets for the annual 5K Glow Run, organised by the community-based 501 Run Club. It was an evening built around fitness and community spirit, with every finisher recognised and awards handed out to the top three in both male and female categories.
The night kicked off at 7PM with a short one-block dash for the under-10s, won by Benaiah Esquivel ahead of Alex Laird, George Dawson, Alexandria Castro and Keon Sutherland. Then came the main event: a 5K course that headed north along Barrier Reef Drive, swung onto Pescador Drive, and ran south along Coconut and Seagrape Drives to a turnaround at Mata Rocks Resort before finishing back at Central Park, with marshals guiding runners the whole way.
Christopher Broaster took the overall win in the male category with a time of 19:09, followed by Kent "Bob" Gabourel in 20:44 and Jordan Santos just two seconds behind at 20:46. In the female race, Merlin Sansores defended her title, crossing in 23:14, with Giselle Correa second at 27:25 and Nayomi Alamilla third at 27:57.
The awards ceremony went deep, with podium spots across age divisions from 10-13 through to 40-and-over. Standouts included young Mila Guerrero leading the girls' 10-13 group, Emily Capri topping the female 14-17 division, and Merlin Sansores doubling up by also leading the women's 40-and-over category. Fitness groups including WOD Zone were recognised alongside the hosts, and organisers Kian Trejo and Marissa Guerrero thanked volunteers and the San Pedro Town Council for backing the event.
For travellers, the takeaway is simple: San Pedro has a genuinely active running scene, and visitors are welcome in it. The 501 Run Club runs regular group sessions on Ambergris Caye, and events like the Glow Run are exactly the kind of low-key, join-in activity that makes a beach holiday feel less like a fortnight of cocktails and more like a proper reset. If you're on the island in early October, it's worth checking whether the next Glow Run lines up with your trip — the flat, seafront course along Barrier Reef Drive is a pleasant one even at a jog, and the Central Park start puts you right in the heart of town.
