Bikini Bottom is going cruising. Royal Caribbean has confirmed that "The SpongeBob Musical" will headline the entertainment line-up aboard Hero of the Seas, the fourth ship in its Icon class, due to start sailing from Miami in August 2027.

This will be the first time the show has ever been staged at sea. It's based on the Nickelodeon cartoon and the Broadway production that picked up a dozen Tony Award nominations, and it will run in the ship's Royal Theater as an all-ages production. Royal Caribbean's entertainment vice president Christi Coachman framed it as part of a line-up built to give families something to share — familiar characters plus the sort of big-stage production values you don't normally get outside a theatre district.

The ship itself is already taking shape. Hero of the Seas was recently floated out at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, and at 250,800 tons it follows the Icon-class blueprint: eight neighbourhoods, nine pools and Category 6, one of the largest water parks ever put on a cruise ship.

Once in service, the Hero will run seven-night Caribbean itineraries out of Miami, and every single sailing stops at Royal Caribbean's private Bahamian playground, Perfect Day at CocoCay. From there, itineraries split two ways: west to Cozumel in Mexico and Roatan in Honduras, or east to Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas and Philipsburg on St. Maarten.

Why does this matter for holiday planners? If you've been circling an Icon-class cruise but baulked at the price or dates of the earlier ships, the fourth sibling gives you a fresh option — and a new headline show to justify the splurge. Families with younger kids get a genuine Broadway-calibre musical without a separate theatre ticket, and the fixed seven-night Miami format makes it easy to pair with a Florida stay before or after. The August 2027 launch also means bookings, cabin categories and dining slots will open well in advance; the best-value cabins on much-hyped new ships tend to go early.

Anyone who sailed Icon of the Seas and wondered how Royal Caribbean could top it should keep an eye on this one — the hardware looks familiar, but the entertainment roster is where the differentiation is happening first.
