Cancun prosecutors have upgraded charges against three people picked up on the Punta Sam highway, moving the case from drug and firearms offences to murder and attempted murder. The Quintana Roo Attorney General's Office (FGE) says the trio are suspected in at least five homicides and two attempted murders in and around the city.
Those in custody are José Enrique "N", 28, from Tabasco, described by prosecutor Arochi Lugo Arana as the leader of the cell; Samuel "N", 22, from Jalisco, allegedly the group's hit man; and Esmeralda Azucena "N", 29, also from Jalisco, said to have acted as lookout. All were detained during a traffic stop on the roadway north of the city last week, when officers seized a Taurus pistol, a Glock and the vehicle they were travelling in.
Investigators are working to tie the group to a string of violent incidents. Those include a multiple homicide in the Valle Verde neighbourhood in October 2025, the killings of two men in the SM 234 district on 24 October 2025 in a dispute over local drug sales, the murder of one man and attempted murders of two others at a bar in SM 238 on 30 March 2026, and the deaths of a man and woman in Los Corales earlier this month — a shooting prosecutors say was a case of mistaken identity, with the victims on their way to a dance rehearsal.
The cell is believed to operate in Cancun and the neighbouring municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, and was engaged in a turf dispute with a rival gang. All three suspects now face combined drug, firearm, murder and attempted murder charges.
For travellers, the context matters. Cancun's hotel zone and resort areas remain heavily policed and the vast majority of visitors experience no trouble, but these cases show that gang violence linked to drug markets does flare up in parts of the city well away from the beach strip — in residential colonias and local bars rather than tourist corridors. The practical takeaway is familiar one: stick to known areas, be cautious in neighbourhood venues off the main tourist drag, and check current government travel advisories for Quintana Roo before you go.
