The Rockies are about to get a lot glowier. In Search of Christmas Spirit, a free outdoor light experience in Banff, is back this winter, turning the Cascade of Time Garden into a lit-up walking trail complete with oversized wildlife sculptures, custom soundscapes and a Christmas story unfolding as you wander.

The trail takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes to walk, and it's genuinely free — though you'll need to reserve tickets online ahead of time, with one ticket per person (kids two and under are the exception). Event evenings run 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., starting Thursday, Nov. 12, 2026. Until mid-December, the event operates Thursday to Sunday on select weekends, then switches to nightly from Dec. 17 through Jan. 3, 2027.

Ticket timing matters here. General admission for visits between Nov. 13 and Dec. 6, 2026 drops on Nov. 2 at 10 a.m., while tickets for Dec. 10 through Jan. 3 are released Nov. 30 at 10 a.m. Popular dates — especially the holiday stretch — will likely go fast. One useful workaround: some Banff hotels offer guests early ticket access, so if you're staying overnight, ask your accommodation how it works. Tourism Banff's website lists participating properties.

The venue is an easy one. The Cascade of Time Garden sits on Cave Avenue, within walking distance of most downtown Banff hotels, so you can often skip driving entirely. If you do drive, there's no parking at the site itself — paid lots at Central Park, about five minutes away, and around downtown are your options.

A few things worth knowing before you lace up your boots. The whole thing is outdoors in the mountains, so bundle up properly for winter conditions; extreme weather can force changes or cancellations. The trail has uneven paths and irregular steps, and it isn't suitable for strollers or wheelchairs — worth planning around if anyone in your group has mobility needs.

Why it matters: holiday-season costs pile up quickly, and a genuinely free, well-produced light experience in one of Canada's most scenic mountain towns is rare. Pair it with Banff's winter staples — hot springs, gondola rides, cozy pub dinners — and you've got a festive getaway that doesn't require a big events budget. Just set an alarm for the ticket release.
