Baros Maldives has taken home the title of Indian Ocean's Leading Water Villa Resort 2026 at the World Travel Awards, one of the industry's longest-running awards programmes decided by votes from travel professionals and the public.
The win centres on what Baros does best: overwater living kept deliberately simple. Each Water Villa has a private deck with direct lagoon access, so a morning swim or a snorkel over the reef is a few steps away. Travellers wanting more room can opt for the 126-square-metre Water Pool Villas, which add a private pool overlooking the lagoon.
The real differentiator is proximity to marine life. Baros is a compact island, and its house reef sits so close to the villas that guests can be swimming among coral gardens within minutes of leaving their deck. It's that villa-to-reef connection, rather than flashy amenities, that the resort credits for the recognition. Sales manager Ibrahim Faisal noted the award reflects the team as much as the setting.
Baros wasn't the only Maldivian property picking up hardware recently. Finolhu, in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, scored five nominations at the Luxury Childcare Association Awards 2026, spanning sustainable childcare, children's programming, family experiences, facilities and baby-and-toddler care. Its set-up splits ages carefully: a Kids Club with creative workshops and island-inspired activities, a separate Teens Hut for older children, and a conservation programme running two coral nurseries with more than 40 coral trees. A two-kilometre sandbank rounds out the family offering.
Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts landed a double at the Travel Trade Maldives Awards 2026, held at CROSSROADS Maldives on 27 August. Ellaidhoo Maldives by Cinnamon won Best Dive Resort thanks to a house reef regarded as among the country's finest, a 24-hour diving facility and access to more than 50 dive sites across North Ari Atoll. Sister property Cinnamon Hakuraa Huraa in Meemu Atoll, a five-star adults-only resort spread across two islands, was named among the Best Honeymoon Destinations.
Meanwhile The Standard, Maldives in Raa Atoll was named Best Family Resort at the Global Destination Awards by World Fashion Channel, presented in Moscow. The resort leans into multigenerational travel with two-bedroom villas, a Lil' Shark Kids Club, sushi-making and soda-making workshops, snorkelling excursions and a new Teen Arcade Lounge with gaming consoles.
Why does a cluster of awards matter to travellers? It's a useful shortcut for narrowing down a destination with well over a hundred resorts.
