If you're plotting free flights for next year, Citi's current welcome offers on its Strata card family deserve a look. The three cards — the no-fee Strata Card, the $95 Strata Premier and the $595 Strata Elite — are now the core of Citi's ThankYou points lineup, and each comes with its own sign-up bonus: 20,000 points after spending $1,000 in three months on the base card, 60,000 after $4,000 on the Premier, and 75,000 after $6,000 on the Elite. Valued at roughly 1.7 cents apiece, those bonuses work out to about $340, $1,020 and $1,275 respectively.

The entry-level Strata Card is a decent starter: no annual fee, 5x points on select Citi Travel bookings, 3x at supermarkets, on transit, gas and EV charging, plus a self-selected bonus category. Two caveats — it charges foreign transaction fees, and its points only reach full value when paired with a premium card that unlocks transfers to airline and hotel partners.

The Strata Premier is widely seen as the sweet spot. For $95 a year you get no foreign transaction fees, 3x on air travel and hotels, dining, gas, EV charging and supermarkets, a $100 annual hotel credit, and — crucially — the ability to move ThankYou points to travel partners at the best transfer rates.

The Strata Elite is Citi's new premium play. It earns 1.5x on everyday spending and up to 6x on dining, and stacks credits: up to $300 for hotels, $200 for Splurge purchases and $200 with the chauffeur service Blacklane, plus Priority Pass lounge membership and four American Airlines Admirals Club passes a year. A quirk worth knowing: some credits run on the calendar year rather than your cardmember year, so first-year value can be disproportionately high if you time your application well.

Eligibility is refreshingly simple. Each card's bonus is judged independently, so holding the Premier doesn't block you from the Elite's offer or vice versa, and legacy Citi Prestige cardholders are still eligible for all three. The one catch: each welcome offer is once per lifetime — the old 48-month wait no longer applies, but you get one shot per card. Pairing any of them with the no-fee Citi Double Cash, which effectively earns 2x ThankYou points on all non-bonused spending, is an easy way to pad your balance.

Why it matters for travellers: transferable points are the currency of cheap premium-cabin flights and hotel redemptions, and 60,000–75,000 points is enough for a serious international redemption. Frequent travellers who can use the Elite's credits will get the most out of it; everyone else should probably start with the Premier, which pays for its fee several times over.
