Christmas in the Maldives looks different depending on which island you wake up on — and the COLOURS OF OBLU brand has just laid out exactly how its four resorts will split the personality test this festive season.
The dates first. OBLU XPERIENCE Ailafushi and adults-only OBLU SELECT Lobigili run their festive programmes from 22 December 2026 to 9 January 2027, while OBLU NATURE Helengeli by SENTIDO and OBLU SELECT Sangeli celebrate from 22 December 2026 to 7 January 2027.
Each island gets its own theme. At Helengeli, the programme is called Reef of Wonder and leans on the resort's biggest asset: the house reef that rings the island. Expect a reef-themed parade for kids, an Indian Ocean-inspired Christmas dinner and an elegant New Year's Eve party, with snorkelling on one of the country's better-known house reefs thrown in as the daytime counterpoint.
Sangeli goes with A Fisherman's Tale, a nod to the Maldives' fishing heritage and the idea of shared abundance. Christmas brings carols and an ocean-themed feast; New Year's Eve layers a themed dinner, beach celebrations and fireworks. It's pitched as the middle ground — sociable but with room for quiet island evenings.
Lobigili is the couples' pick. A Festive Season, Made for Two keeps things intimate on Christmas Eve, then swings into Gatsby-era glamour for New Year's Eve with live performances and a countdown. Private beach dinners, spa sessions and underwater dining run throughout, which is about as on-brand for an adults-only Maldives resort as it gets.
Ailafushi is the loud, family-friendly one. Under the banner A Golden Festive Season, it kicks off with Santa arriving on Sunset Beach and a Christmas lunch, then builds to New Year's Eve with a cocktail gathering, gala dinner, live entertainment, a fire show and fireworks at midnight.
The takeaway for anyone planning a Maldives Christmas: the brand deliberately runs four parallel versions of the same holiday, so the choice of island matters more than the choice of brand. Families who want energy and kids' programming will gravitate to Ailafushi; honeymooners get Lobigili; divers and snorkellers get Helengeli's reef; and Sangeli splits the difference for mixed groups. Booking early is worth it — the overlap with peak season (late December into early January) is the most in-demand and priciest window in the Maldives, and themed gala dinners and NYE events at these resorts tend to be bundled into festive supplements or minimum-stay requirements. Note that Helengeli and Sangeli wrap up their celebrations two days earlier than the other two, which matters if you're eyeing a 7 or 8 January departure.
If a festive Maldives trip is on your radar for 2026, deciding between these four islands is really deciding what kind of festive person you are: glamorous, romantic, marine-obsessed or all-in family chaos. The good news is you don't have to leave the brand to find your fit. — Maldives Insider
