Diwali usually conjures images of diyas and city streets in India — not white-sand lagoons. But Centara is bringing the Festival of Lights to the Maldives this November, with celebrations rolling out across four of its island resorts, each putting its own spin on the occasion.

The dates to know: Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives and family-focused Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives, both in North Malé Atoll, run programmes from 7–9 November. Machchafushi Island Resort & Spa in South Ari Atoll and the adults-only Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa in North Malé Atoll host one-night celebrations on 8 November.

Each island does Diwali differently. At Grand Lagoon, expect festive arts and crafts, family activities, Bollywood entertainment and open-air cinema under the stars. Mirage Lagoon — home to the Maldives' first lazy river and a dedicated water park — leans into hands-on fun with rangoli-making, creative masterclasses, Indian-inspired dining, festive cocktails and a beachside fire show. Machchafushi, known for its house reef and diving, mixes henna artistry and sunset yoga with a cocktail-making session and a curated Indian buffet followed by Bollywood beats. Ras Fushi keeps it culinary: a beachfront biryani dinner on Waves Beach featuring regional specialities, tandoori dishes and festive sweets, with music and karaoke afterwards at Giraavaru Bar.

The celebrations land at a sweet spot in the Maldives calendar — early November sits at the tail of the shoulder season, often with good weather and softer rates than the December peak. For travellers who love Indian food and culture but crave an island escape, it's a rare chance to combine both in one trip.

Elsewhere in Maldives news: Soneva Fushi, in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, won Excellence in Sustainable Childcare at the Luxury Childcare Association Awards 2026 — the only Maldivian property among five category winners — thanks to its children's club The Den, where kids do tree planting, recycled paper-making and visits to the resort's waste-to-product Eco Centro. And The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives has expanded its overwater spa with a new Contrast Therapy Circuit (sauna, steam, cold plunges and bucket showers) plus three-day wellness journeys blending yoga, tennis, hammam rituals and sound healing, capped off at Tonic Lounge, an adults-only swim-up juice bar.

Why it matters: if a beach holiday with genuine festivity sounds better than another quiet week at the pool, Diwali at a Maldivian resort delivers colour, food and entertainment without lifting a finger to plan it. Families should look at Mirage Lagoon; couples and adults-only travellers at Ras Fushi; divers at Machchafushi.
