A mild patch of November weather is giving Edmonton a last taste of autumn before winter settles in, and the city is packing the calendar with new openings to match. Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting mostly sunny skies this week, with temperatures holding above zero all day on Thursday, Nov. 5 and Friday, Nov. 6. Monday, Nov. 3 could hit 11°C, and both Friday and Sunday, Nov. 8 are expected to top out around 10°C — practically balmy by early-November Alberta standards.
If you'd rather be indoors, the Royal Alberta Museum has a big draw coming. Its new feature exhibition, HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever, opens Nov. 26 and traces how ice hockey has evolved through technology and science — everything from equipment advances to the physics of the game. It's aimed squarely at fans of the sport, and it's a solid excuse to visit one of the city's flagship museums.
Two retail openings are worth knowing about. Downtown, Poppy's cafe opens on 100th Avenue this Saturday, Nov. 7, serving pastries, cold-pressed juices and coffee made with house-made syrups. Over at West Edmonton Mall, DJI opened the first authorized DJI store in Canada with a soft launch on Oct. 31; the official grand opening follows on Friday, Nov. 20. Until then you can still browse drones and camera gear in person and get advice from the store team.
And for anyone ready to lean into the festive season early: RAD Torque Raceway's Magic of Lights drive-through display returns from Thursday, Nov. 19 through Saturday, Jan. 2. It's a stay-in-your-car format with light tunnels and holiday scenes, which makes it an easy, weather-proof evening out — you bring the thermos, they bring the lights.
Why it matters: early November is a shoulder-season sweet spot in Edmonton. Accommodation tends to be cheaper than the summer peak, the snow hasn't fully claimed the city yet, and indoor attractions like the museum exhibit plus the mall's new stores give you plenty to do if the weather turns. It's a good window for a low-key city break — coffee stop downtown, an afternoon at the Royal Alberta Museum, an evening at the lights, with West Edmonton Mall as the all-weather backup plan.
