About an hour's drive south of San Francisco, the tiny village of San Martin is quietly doing its own thing while California's big-name wine regions pack in tour buses. It sits in Santa Clara County, part of the Santa Clara Valley wine region, and its selling point is simple: family-run wineries, relaxed tasting rooms and barely any crowds.
The grape-growing credentials are legit — Mediterranean climate and well-draining soils give the area solid conditions. Start with Miramar Vineyards, a family operation rated 4.7 on Google that pours small-lot, hand-harvested estate wines including cabernet sauvignon, sangiovese and zinfandel. It's dog-friendly, has a patio and a bocce court, and offers a five-bottle curated tasting package. Lion Ranch Vineyards and Winery works five acres of Rhône and Provence-style varieties — grenache noir and blanc, cinsault, Marsanne, roussanne — with an open-air tasting area looking over the hills and a calendar of events worth checking before you go.
Tank House Winery, named for old water-storage buildings, focuses on classic reds plus a few whites and rosés, with mountain views from the tasting room. Note it only opens on weekends. If you're staying on-site at the CordeValle resort anyway, there's a winery right on the property.
When you're not sipping, San Martin keeps things low-key. The village has no big malls — just small shops and antiques. Lost Times Thrift and Vintage is the pick for treasure-hunting, with clothing, glassware and furniture arranged for easy browsing. For something different, the Wings of History Air Museum (founded 1988) displays aircraft including a 1903 Wright Flyer replica, a Stinson 10 and an American Eagle Model A-101, plus exhibits on women in aviation and both World Wars — and you can try the flight simulator.
Anglers have two solid options nearby. Uvas Reservoir County Park, about 10 minutes away, has a 259-acre reservoir with six species including spotted and largemouth bass, carp, catfish, bluegill and black crappie. Coyote Lake at the 6,695-acre Coyote Lake–Harvey Bear Ranch County Park is roughly 20 minutes out and offers largemouth, smallmouth, black and striped bass, sunfish, rainbow trout, channel catfish and brown bullhead.
Getting there is easy: a little over an hour from San Francisco, about 30 minutes from San Jose, under an hour from Santa Cruz, or two hours and 15 minutes from Fresno. For a place this small, the accommodation is impressive — the 5-star CordeValle resort and the top-rated Fitz Place. If Napa's prices and parking headaches have worn you down, this is the low-effort wine weekend that skips all of it.
