Miami's cruise calendar just got a new entry at the luxury end. Explora III, the third ship from MSC Group's upscale brand Explora Journeys, arrived at PortMiami on October 25 to begin its inaugural winter programme in the Caribbean.

The season runs through early April 2027, with departures from three homeports: Florida (Miami), Puerto Rico and Barbados. That mix gives travellers a choice between shorter Caribbean loops and longer southern itineraries starting further down the island chain — a setup more common among boutique lines than mass-market ones.

There's a bigger story behind the deployment. Once the winter season wraps, the 922-guest ship repositions to the West Coast to launch Explora Journeys' very first Alaska programme. For a brand that has so far focused on Europe and warmer waters, that's a notable expansion, and it means the same vessel offering Caribbean sun this winter will be sailing among glaciers by mid-2027.

Explora III is a new build by any measure. It entered service this summer, weighs 72,810 tons, and only made its North American debut in late September. The Miami arrival was treated as a formal occasion, with a plaque exchange involving PortMiami chief Jonathan Daniels, MSC Cruises USA chairman Rick Sasso, CLIA president Bud Darr, Switzerland's Consul General Rene Riedi and Captain Pietro Sinisi.

The fleet is growing fast, too. Explora IV arrives in spring 2027, with Explora V and VI following later that year and in summer 2028 respectively. The shipyard milestones are already stacking up: at Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente yard in Genoa, Explora V was floated out and Explora VI held its coin ceremony — the traditional ceremony marking a ship's construction milestone — on the same day as the Miami debut.

For travellers, this is worth flagging if you like the idea of a smaller, more spacious ship in the Caribbean. With fewer than 1,000 guests, Explora III sits in a very different category from the 5,000-plus mega-shares sailing out of Miami, and it promises the kind of all-suite, high staff-to-guest format that lines like this compete on. The multi-homeport winter schedule also opens up practical options: fly into San Juan or Barbados for a getaway that skips the Florida crowds, or use Miami if you're combining the cruise with a longer US trip. Booking early tends to pay off with new ships on their first season, when launch itineraries and pricing are usually at their most attractive.
