Bilt Rewards is quietly changing how its credit card rewards work, and existing cardholders need to take action in the app or they'll lose a valuable earning option at their next card renewal.

Today, Bilt card members pick between two reward modes. The first earns 4% back in Bilt Cash on top of regular points — money that can fund points-earning on rent or mortgage payments, unlock faster points accelerators, or be spent with partners like Blade, Lyft, Walgreens and hotels. The second skips Bilt Cash entirely and instead earns up to 1.25x on housing payments, scaled to how much you spent on the card that month.

Bilt is moving everyone to the second model by default. But there's an escape hatch: anyone who already holds a card, or applies, gets approved and accepts it through December 31, can opt to keep the legacy Bilt Cash structure. For heavy card users — people who rack up enough Bilt Cash that it outweighs what a 1.25x rent bonus would deliver — the old model is almost certainly the better deal. Light spenders whose rewards mainly go toward rent could come out ahead on the new one.

The catch is that the choice isn't made for you. The new model is pre-selected in the app, and if you do nothing, you'll be switched at your renewal date with no way back — once you're on the new structure, the change is irreversible. Preserving the old one, on the other hand, costs nothing and leaves the door open: you can always switch to the new model later if you change your mind.

Making the switch in the app is quick. Open your wallet, select your Bilt card, then head to your current Bonus Rewards choice (or Manage card, then bonus rewards at the bottom). Tap 'your rewards are updating' at the top of the screen — the new model will already be ticked as the default — swipe right, choose 'flexible Bilt Cash' and save. Do it before your renewal date and you're set.

For travellers, this matters more than it might first appear. Bilt Cash converts into points and partner redemptions, so the 4% earning can quietly subsidise flights and hotel stays. If you hold the card and use it for everyday spending, five minutes in the app now could be worth real money down the line. If you've been eyeing the card, applying and accepting before the end of the year secures the same option. Source: View from the Wing.
