Finnair is running a points sale that doubles as a status play. Until November 16, 2026 (4:59 p.m. Eastern), members can buy up to 200,000 Avios at 1.085 cents each — so the full 200,000 runs $2,170 — and every purchase throws in tier points worth 10% of the Avios bought. That's the interesting part: those tier points count towards Finnair elite status, which maps onto oneworld benefits you can actually use on American Airlines flights.
A few mechanics matter. You need a Finnair Plus account opened before October 30 with at least 50 Avios in it, and the usual annual purchase cap has been reset, so even frequent buyers can max out. Purchases go through Points.com, meaning they won't code as airline spend — use a card that earns well on unbonused spending. The sweet spot is 120,000 Avios for $1,302: Finnair's milestone reward adds 3,000 bonus Avios for Basic members crossing 12,000 tier points, dropping the effective price to about 1.059 cents each. Shopping portals like Rove (1 mile per dollar) and Extrabux (1.6%–2% back) can shave it further.
The status math: buying 150,000 Avios earns Finnair Silver (oneworld Ruby) outright — free checked bags on American, Group 4 boarding, not much more. Gold (oneworld Sapphire) needs 45,000 tier points, and the max purchase only gets you 20,000. But Finnair lets you convert Avios into tier points at 3:1, capped at 7,500 per tracking period for Basic or Silver members. Buying the maximum and converting gets you 27,500 points; the remaining 17,500 gap can come from flying — roughly 6,400 miles in discounted business class on American, since Finnair credits J, C and D fares at 250% plus a Silver bonus. Existing Gold members renewing have it far easier: 200,000 purchased Avios plus a 67,500-Avios conversion gets them to 42,500 of the required 45,000. Short a small amount? Transfer Capital One points to Finnair at 1:1, or move Avios over via British Airways, and convert the rest for a €10 fee.
Why bother with Sapphire? It unlocks oneworld business class lounges — and because the status comes from Finnair rather than American, American allows Flagship Lounge access even on eligible domestic itineraries, with one guest. Gold also covers Admirals Clubs and Alaska Lounges, plus four Finnair short-haul upgrade certificates or a two-for-one award swap.
And the Avios themselves are worth having. Finnair moved to Avios, so everything transfers 1:1, fee-free, to British Airways and onward to Qatar Airways and other partners — handy for long-haul business class redemptions.
One catch worth repeating: check your personal tracking period before buying. It's not the calendar year, and the purchase, conversion and any flights all need to land inside the same one.
