Google has crunched five years of Google Flights data to pin down the cheapest booking windows for the 2026 holiday season, and the findings upend a lot of familiar advice. The biggest myth busted: the day you book barely matters. Wednesday beats Sunday, but only by about 1.4 percent. What actually moves the needle is how far ahead you book — and the clock is already ticking.

For Thanksgiving, fares bottom out around 34 days before departure, which is October 23 for a November 26 flight. The broader low-price window runs from 21 to 57 days out, roughly September 30 to November 5. Christmas is cheaper when booked even earlier: around 56 days out, or October 30 for a December 25 departure — five days earlier than last year's data suggested. The best-value stretch for Christmas runs from late October to mid-November. Spring break follows the same pattern, with the sweet spot at 50 days out (about January 24 for a March 15 trip), a week earlier than last year.

There are real savings in how you fly, too. Departing on a Monday and returning Tuesday or Wednesday cuts costs by roughly 14 percent versus weekend itineraries, and up to 20 percent domestically compared with a Sunday-to-Sunday trip. Nonstop tickets run about 20 percent pricier than connecting flights on average — worth considering if a layover doesn't ruin your day.

Google's data also shows where travellers are looking. Thanksgiving search spikes point to Hilo in Hawaii, Buffalo, Columbus, Punta Gorda in Florida, and Greenville, South Carolina — a mix of tropical escapes and mid-sized regional cities that feel less overrun than the usual picks. Hilo especially trades the resort-circuit version of Hawaii for something quieter.

For Christmas and New Year's, the international list is eclectic: Athens, Québec City, Rio de Janeiro, Hanoi and Guatemala City. That spans European winter lights, a Southern Hemisphere summer in Rio, and street-food-heavy cities rewarding travellers on foot. International trips follow their own timeline — fares are cheapest about 89 days out, which means September 27 for a December 25 departure, with the low-price range stretching from roughly August 14 to November 5.

The takeaway is simple: if a holiday trip is on your list for 2026, pick your dates and book now rather than waiting for a mythical deal. The data says the good fares appear weeks or months ahead, not at the last minute, and waiting through November for Christmas flights means paying more.
