Holland America has pulled forward a major refit of its Oosterdam, and Caribbean cruisers are the beneficiaries. The line's dry dock work in Marseille, France — part of its shipwide Holland America Evolution programme — will now start five weeks ahead of schedule, putting the refreshed ship back in service on Oct. 31, 2027 instead of early December.
The payoff for anyone eyeing a winter sun escape: on Dec. 11, 2027, the transformed Oosterdam kicks off an 11-day Caribbean itinerary sailing roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale. The ship crosses the Atlantic to South Florida in late November, then settles into its Caribbean programme — one of five new voyages Holland America has added thanks to the accelerated timeline.
So what actually changes onboard? The Evolution renovation brings new stateroom and suite categories, a Grand Dutch Café (a signature of the line's recent refits, serving Dutch coffee and pastries), and a redesigned Ocean Bar. It's the same formula Holland America has applied across its fleet, and the demand is clearly there — line president Beth Bodensteiner credited an "unprecedented response" to the Evolution programme for the decision to move up the dry dock.
There's a catch for a small group of booked passengers. Several Oosterdam sailings between Sept. 11 and Dec. 9, 2027 have been cancelled to accommodate the earlier refurbishment. Holland America says affected travellers and their travel advisors are being contacted with rebooking options — so if you're booked on the ship in that window, expect outreach rather than a surprise on sailing day.
