The first ship to emerge from Holland America Line's multi-year modernisation programme now has a launch date and a route map. The line has opened bookings for five new Oosterdam voyages, starting with the ship's inaugural post-transformation sailing on October 31, 2027.
Oosterdam is the first vessel to go through Holland America Evolution, a fleet-wide refit programme that brings the features of the line's flagship Pinnacle Class to older ships. The drydock work will now start earlier than originally planned, and once it's done, the refreshed ship kicks things off with a 10-day Adriatic Antiquities cruise from Civitavecchia (Rome) to Trieste.
The itinerary reads like a greatest-hits of the eastern Mediterranean: calls in Italy, Greece, Montenegro and Croatia, ending in Trieste on Italy's northeastern coast. Passengers on this first sailing get the bragging rights of being aboard a freshly transformed ship before anyone else — a point Holland America's president Beth Bodensteiner leaned on when announcing the new departures, framing them as a chance to see both the familiar Holland America experience and what the fleet will look like going forward.
After that maiden voyage, the ship works her way from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean across four more newly opened sailings. From Trieste, an 11-day Adriatic Antiquities cruise to Croatia, the Greek Isles and Istanbul departs November 10, 2027, finishing in Piraeus (Athens). A shorter, seven-day Mediterranean Splendor run through the Greek Isles and Malta follows on November 21, sailing from Piraeus to Barcelona.
Then comes the repositioning trip, and it's an appealing one in its own right: a 13-day Cultural Crossing from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, departing November 28, 2027, with a stop in Gibraltar. Crossing passengers get long, relaxed sea days plus a slice of Spain's southern coast before landing in the US. From Fort Lauderdale, the Oosterdam rounds out the collection with an 11-day Eastern Caribbean itinerary through the Windward and Leeward Islands, roundtrip and departing December 11, 2027 — a proper early-winter escape for anyone chasing sunshine at the start of the season.
Why it matters: repositioning cruises like the Barcelona-to-Fort Lauderdale crossing often offer strong value per night compared with standard itineraries, and early bookings on a newly refitted ship tend to come with the widest choice of cabins. If you've cruised Holland America before, this is a chance to see what Evolution changes; if you haven't, a 10- or 11-day Mediterranean itinerary hitting four or five countries in one trip is a low-effort way to sample the region without constant packing and unpacking.
These five sailings are on sale now, with the line pointing travellers to its website for more on the wider Evolution programme and which ships get the treatment next.
