A hotel stay in West Delhi for about the cost of an airport sandwich in Europe sounds too good to be true. But a recent three-night stay at the Hyatt Centric Janakpuri New Delhi suggests this property is one of the better-value full-service hotels in the Indian capital, at least if you can live with a neighbourhood that is not exactly on the tourist map.
The writer checked in at 10:30 am after taking the Delhi Metro straight from the airport, expecting to wait. Instead, with occupancy low, the front desk not only had the room ready but upgraded him to an Executive Suite — a large king room with a generous sitting area, though true suite fans would argue a real suite needs a separate bedroom. The bathroom had both a tub and a walk-in shower, and small touches stood out: individual toiletry bottles rather than wall dispensers, plus shaving, dental and vanity kits.
Facilities go beyond what the price suggests. There is a 24/7 fitness centre with a solid range of Precor cardio and strength equipment (one quirk: the light switches hide in a closet in the neighbouring spa and shut off overnight to save energy), a fourth-floor outdoor pool open 7:00 am to 8:30 pm, and a steam room in the locker rooms. Tattva Wellness runs the on-site spa, though a 90-minute massage at 5,960 INR (about $60) sits at the pricey end for India.
Food is covered around the clock. Kitchen District, the 24/7 restaurant, serves Indian and Western dishes and puts on buffets for breakfast and dinner with a good spread of Indian, American and Continental options — though coffee disappointed while the chai passed muster. A lobby café sells coffee, chai and bakery items from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm.
The real highlight was service. An early check-in, a proactive upgrade despite only Discoverist status, warm greetings at every lobby pass, and a restaurant manager who kept circling the breakfast room offering refills — the kind of attentiveness that makes a modest hotel memorable.
Who is this for? Not someone who wants to step out the door into Connaught Place or Old Delhi's lanes — Janakpuri is a residential and commercial district well west of the main sights. But for Hyatt loyalists redeeming points or chasing night credits, business travellers in west Delhi, or long-term visitors who want a comfortable base with a gym, pool and reliable breakfast for $51 a night (closer to $80 in peak season), it is an easy recommendation. One practical tip if you arrive by Metro from the airport: ignore Google Maps and exit the station through door 2, not door 3.
