JetBlue has bumped up its checked bag fees for the second time this year, and the new pricing kicks in for flights booked from Nov. 3. The headline number: a first checked bag now costs a minimum of $50 — a 28% jump from the lowest fee travellers paid before. Skip the pre-payment and it's $60 at the airport.

Because JetBlue prices bags dynamically, dates matter. On peak travel days — think school holidays and major holiday periods through October 2027 — the first bag climbs to $55 if you pre-pay, or a steep $70 if you leave it to the airport. Second bags run $70 to $75 off-peak and up to $85 at the airport on peak days. The fees apply to Blue, Blue Basic, Blue Extra and EvenMore fares booked for travel within the US, Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada.

There's a silver lining for anyone who already booked: trips purchased before Nov. 3 — including holiday getaways — stay on the old, cheaper fee schedule.

JetBlue blames rising fuel and operating costs, and argues the à la carte model keeps base fares low for people who don't check luggage. But this is bigger than one airline. When JetBlue raised fees in late March, nearly every major US carrier — United, Delta, American and even historically bag-fee-free Southwest — followed within weeks. Expect a similar domino effect this time.

The squeeze comes as fares climb too. Budget carrier Frontier recently reported passengers paid 71% more in fares than the prior quarter, with jet fuel costs being passed straight down the line. And here's the frustrating part for flyers: bag fees almost never drop back, even if fuel prices cool off.

A few ways to dodge the charges. JetBlue's cobranded credit cards still include free checked bags, as does Mosaic elite status. Flyers in the premium Mint cabin — and the new domestic first-class BlueFirst seats debuting next month — get their first bag free. Meanwhile, carry-on rules remain generous: every fare type, including Blue Basic, gets a full-size carry-on in the overhead bin, so packing light can save you $50-plus each way.

If you're flying JetBlue this winter, the maths is simple: book (and pre-pay) bags before Nov. 3 if you can, check whether your credit card or status already covers a bag, and on peak dates think twice before paying $70 at the airport for a suitcase that might fit overhead.
