Painted houses in deep red, baby blue, mossy green and lavender crowd together along the curving streets of Narberth, a small market town of roughly 2,300 people in Pembrokeshire, southwest Wales. The town's heartbeat is its High Street, lined with independent shops that have traded here for generations — bargain store The Bargain Box and menswear spot Tom Hughes among them. Narberth's history stretches back to the Middle Ages, and castle ruins still sit at the southern edge of town. That heritage shows up in its antiques scene. Malthouse Antiques is a big emporium representing around 25 dealers, selling furniture, decor and vintage clothing right next door to The Golden Sheaf, while Narberth Antiques & Interiors occupies the same block.
For a town this size, the food offering punches well above its weight. The Barley Gastrobar does steaks and seafood; Masala serves Indian and Bangladeshi classics daily; Get Stuffed Pizza Co. covers the Italian side of things. Everything is walkable, and traditional pubs cluster at the north end of the High Street.
Getting there is straightforward: a train from London Paddington via Newport to Narberth takes about four and a half hours, and driving takes roughly the same, with the freedom to stop along Wales's rural coast. Stay in town at the Plas Hyfryd Hotel or The Star, a "micro pub with rooms" on Market Square. The real strategic value of Narberth is as a base or pit stop before Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, where sandy beaches, sea views and dolphin-spotting await. Summers are cool — average highs around 64°F — winters are mild, and rain falls year-round, so pack a raincoat and waterproof boots.
