The gated marina town of Puerto Aventuras, south of Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo, has a new acting leader following the weekend arrest of its mayor, Gilberto Gómez Martínez.

The Playa del Carmen City Council approved an urgent resolution naming Juan José Arena Carvajal as interim mayor. Councillors said the move is designed to guarantee administrative continuity in the district — keeping public services running and ensuring residents and businesses continue to be attended to — while the elected mayor deals with his legal situation.

Gómez Martínez was picked up on warrants alongside a city council member and his nephew. All three face charges of aggravated extortion, according to local authorities.

Importantly, the council stressed that the appointment is a temporary substitution, not a punishment. It does not mean Gómez Martínez has been dismissed, suspended or stripped of his mandate, and it is not a judgement on his guilt or innocence. The arrangement stays in place only as long as circumstances prevent him from carrying out his duties.

For travellers, the practical takeaway is simple: it is business as usual in Puerto Aventuras. The town — known for its marina, golf course, dolphin encounters and beaches along the Riviera Maya — sits within the municipality of Solidaridad, whose seat is Playa del Carmen, which is why the Playa del Carmen council handled the appointment. Hotels, restaurants, the marina and day-to-day services are unaffected, and the council's stated aim was precisely to preserve the provision of services to inhabitants and visitors alike.

Puerto Aventuras is a popular low-key alternative to the busier resort strips of Cancún and Playa del Carmen, and many visitors pass through on the way to Tulum or the nearby cenotes and theme parks. There is no indication from this story that any tourist-facing operations are disrupted, so if you have a trip booked, there is no reason to change plans. At most, expect the usual local news chatter around town rather than anything visible on the ground.

We'll keep an eye on developments as the legal process unfolds.
