Mexico's Caribbean coast is about to get noticeably easier to reach. Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama has announced a batch of new international and domestic routes into Cancun and Tulum airports for the 2026-2027 winter season, with launches staggered between October 2026 and January 2027.

The headline news for European travellers: Air France is adding Paris-Cancun three times a week from October 13, while Italian carrier Neos starts a weekly Verona-Cancun service on December 22. Both fly into Cancun International, which remains the region's main gateway and will soak up most of the new transatlantic capacity.

Canada, as ever the Mexican Caribbean's biggest winter feeder, dominates the schedule. Cancun gains Calgary service from both Air Canada (four weekly flights from December 11) and Flair (four weekly from December 17), plus Flair's new Edmonton and Montreal routes at three flights a week each, Porter's Halifax service (three weekly from December 18), Air Transat's Fredericton flight and a new weekly Windsor-Cancun route from December 19.

Tulum's newer international airport is the real story for anyone heading to the Riviera Maya's quieter, design-hotel end. It picks up six new Canadian connections: Air Transat and Air Canada from Montreal, Air Canada and WestJet from Toronto, a Calgary service and a weekly Quebec City flight — most starting in late October. From the US, United-linked Newark-Tulum begins with two weekly flights on December 17. Cancun's US additions are all budget carrier Breeze: Tampa, Pittsburgh and Richmond, launching between December 19 and January 8.

Domestically, Viva Aerobus adds Acapulco-Cancun twice weekly from November 3, and Volaris connects Los Cabos three times a week from December 1 — handy if you're plotting a Pacific-and-Caribbean double-header.

For travellers, this matters in a few practical ways. More direct flights to Tulum means skipping the roughly two-hour transfer from Cancun airport, which has long been the price of staying south. And the surge of winter capacity on routes like Halifax-Cancun or Fredericton-Cancun usually translates into competitive fares from smaller Canadian cities that historically required connections. Book early for the December-to-March high season regardless — flights may be new, but hotel rates in Tulum and Playa del Carmen won't get cheaper closer to Christmas.

If you've been putting off a Riviera Maya trip because the air links felt indirect or the schedules thin, this winter's timetable is a good excuse to stop waiting.
