Runners aren't just travelling for race day anymore — they're squeezing an entire city break into 24 hours around it. Google searches for "marathon abroad" have jumped around 1,255% in the past year, hitting an all-time high in 2026, and searches for one-day itineraries in marathon cities have risen by as much as 500%.

The data comes from Bókun, a Tripadvisor-owned company, which analysed Google Trends from the past 30 days for cities hosting major autumn races. Hamburg leads the pack with a 500% spike in "what to do in Hamburg" searches ahead of HYROX Hamburg (28 October to 1 November). Lisbon follows at 400%, Munich at 250%, Berlin at 119%, Budapest at 84% and Amsterdam at 70%.

The timing is no accident. Autumn is marathon season: 42% of the world's marathons happen in autumn, and October alone hosts 23% of them. This autumn's European calendar includes the Berlin marathon and HYROX Rome in September, then the Amsterdam, Munich, Lisbon and Budapest marathons plus HYROX Valencia in October.

What's interesting is how race-day travel overlaps with another trend: the micro-cation. Travellers — runners or not — are hunting for short, tightly planned getaways that pack maximum experience into minimum time. That shows in the broader search numbers too. Queries for "Budapest day tours" are up more than 400% year on year, "Amsterdam day tours" up over 100%, and "day tours in Lisbon" up more than 70%.

And it's not all sightseeing. Food experiences are a big draw: "Lisbon cooking class" searches surged 488% and "Rome food tour" rose 94% over the past year. It seems a post-race plate of pastéis or a carb-loading cooking session is part of the plan from the start.

Social media is fuelling all this — TikTok videos on the best cities for HYROX or marathon holiday itineraries regularly pull thousands of views — and travel experts think race-cations could push trip bookings well past the usual summer peak.

For anyone toying with the idea, the formula is simple: pick an autumn race, book flights for a day or two either side, and use a guided tour or day itinerary to hit the highlights without wrecking your legs before the start line. If you're racing in Lisbon, a walking tour plus a food experience covers the top searches in one go; in Hamburg, the city's harbourside sights make a compact pre-race day easy.
