Sandal brand REEF has spent more than forty years building a reputation on beach-friendly comfort, and its new Del Mar sneaker is an attempt to carry that ethos well past the shoreline. The idea is simple: one shoe that can handle a morning meeting, a bike commute, a long walk and a sunset drink, without looking out of place at any of them.

The Del Mar is pitched as the anti-specialist shoe. Instead of splitting your footwear between cushioned trainers, polished office shoes and casual weekend kicks, REEF wants the Del Mar to cover the wide middle ground of daily life. Podcast co-host Jack Crivici-Kramer, quoted in the launch coverage, puts it bluntly: they work with jeans, khakis, shorts and possibly even a tuxedo.

Underfoot is where the comfort claims live. A rubber-infused foam midsole provides cushioning, a FlexCore insole adds support, and a heel "gravity pod" is designed to help the shoe roll forward with each step — the difference, REEF argues, between a shoe you tolerate and one you reach for every day. Photographer Corey Wilson, who spends long days on his feet in changing environments, highlights the slip-on convenience as the real draw.

The upper is an engineered knit that flexes with the foot and breathes well enough to keep things cool when you move from an active setting to a smarter one. An elastic lace setup makes it feel closer to a sock than a sneaker, with a hands-free step-in design, while conventional laces are included in the box for anyone who prefers a traditional fit.

Traction gets thoughtful treatment too. The outsole uses rubber pods only at the toe and heel — the spots that wear out first — which keeps grip where it matters on wet streets or slippery docks while keeping overall weight down. It's a detail born of REEF's coastal roots, and one that frequent travellers packing light will appreciate.

There's a sustainability story as well. The brand uses Leather Working Group-certified leathers, and supports ocean-focused initiatives including a partnership with The Mega Lab to map one million coral reefs by 2030, plus work with the Surfrider Foundation and the Better Beach Alliance on beach cleanups and coastal preservation.

To be clear, REEF isn't claiming the Del Mar replaces hiking boots or formal dress shoes. The pitch is narrower and arguably more useful: a single, light, good-looking shoe for everything in between, which is exactly the kind of versatility that makes packing easier. If you're the type who squishes a trip into carry-on luggage and resents dedicating bag space to three pairs of shoes, a sneaker that can go from a city walking day to a nicer dinner without complaint is worth a look.
