If your mental image of American retirement stops at Florida, a quiet corner of the Missouri Ozarks would like a word. Shannon County, in the south-central part of the state, is being pitched as a low-cost alternative for older buyers who care more about rivers and pine forest than beach bars — and the numbers make a decent case.

Start with the outdoors. Echo Bluff State Park, about 26 miles north of the county's biggest town, Winona, is anchored by a towering bluff curving over the clear water of Sinking Creek, a quarter-mile of which runs through the park. You can float, swim, or fish for smallmouth bass, then sleep properly at the Betty Lea Lodge or in private cabins with bluff and creek views. Next door sits Current River State Park, and the two are linked by the 10.6-mile Current River Trail — a tough day out, gaining over 1,400 feet and taking five-plus hours, but with river and hollow views that hikers on AllTrails rate highly. Shorter options exist too, like the 4.2-mile Ninebark Trail with wildflowers, white oaks, ruins of an old pine plantation, and a dolomite glade.

Just past the county's northern edge, Montauk State Park on the Current River has been called America's most affordable state park, with rainbow trout fishing, hiking and biking. Within the county itself, the Sunklands Conservation Area protects native plants — including the only known spot to see purple monkshood flowers. Round Spring, up Highway 19 near Eminence, puts you close to the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, where wild horses roam free.

Then there's the money. Average rent in Shannon County sits under $600 a month, against a Florida average above $2,340 according to Zillow, and Census-based analysis points to a favourable home-value-to-income ratio. Niche grades the county an A for cost of living and B+ for outdoor activities, though an overall C reflects the trade-offs. Winona has fewer than 1,000 residents; the county is rural, overwhelmingly so, and you will need a car or the limited door-to-door SMTS shuttle service, which runs to Springfield only a few times a month. St. Louis is roughly three hours by road.

Weather is mild for most of the year, with cold snowy winters and humid summer spells — comfortable enough to be outdoors much of the time. Social life for retirees centres on things like the Winona Senior Center's crafts, chair yoga, bingo and farmers market.

Who is this for? Not anyone chasing city energy or diversity — the county grades poorly there. But if you want a house-priced-like-a-car lifestyle, world-class floating and trout water on your doorstep, and neighbours who wave, Shannon County is a genuinely credible retirement pick. It also works as a low-key holiday base: book a cabin at Echo Bluff, spend a week on the Current River, and see whether slow Ozark living suits you before committing to anything.
