A mobile phone video showing five private security guards kicking and punching a man on the ground in Porto has triggered a formal investigation by Portugal's Public Prosecutor's Office. The footage, now with the PSP police, led to the swift identification of all five guards involved, and the case is being treated with the seriousness you'd expect from such graphic images.

The Unified Private Security Union (SUSP) hasn't tried to excuse what happened. Its leader, Cláudio Ferreira, told SIC there are simply no words for five colleagues beating a customer who was already on the ground. But he did lay out how the night reportedly unravelled.

According to the union's account, the trouble started inside a bar at around the time some venues start charging entry. The customer left to fetch friends waiting outside, then reacted furiously when asked to pay a €10 admission fee on his way back in. He allegedly insulted the doorman and threw chairs from the bar's outdoor seating area, at which point guards from that venue — and apparently others nearby — got involved. Ferreira also suggested the man may have been under the influence of drugs at the time.

The union leader argued the episode stains a profession he describes as difficult and poorly paid, and is pushing for better training plus legislative changes that would let private security staff carry some form of defensive equipment. His argument is that proper restraint tools might have let the guards subdue the man quickly, avoiding a prolonged street assault.

Whatever the outcome of the investigation, the case fits a familiar pattern: clashes at bar doors, sometimes over cover charges late at night, escalating far beyond what anyone would consider reasonable. For anyone heading to Portugal, the practical takeaway is straightforward. Cover charges and door policies are common in Porto's nightlife districts, tempers flare, and getting into an argument with door staff is never worth it — step away, or find another bar. If something does go badly wrong, the national emergency number is 112 and the PSP handle urban policing in Porto.
