Abu Dhabi's weekend calendar is looking unusually packed, with a new Japanese brunch, a major museum show, Bavarian beer, a limited-run afternoon tea and a free health initiative all landing at once. Here's what's worth knowing.
The biggest draw is at Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island, which has teamed up with France's Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts for "Spices and Wonders: Sailing the Indian Ocean". The exhibition traces a thousand years of maritime trade across the Indian Ocean, showing how the network linked the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa, India, Southeast Asia, China, Japan and Europe. More than 200 artworks and objects are split across six sections, and tickets cost Dhs70 for adults with under-18s going free. It runs until February 14, so there's no rush — but it's a good anchor for a Saadiyat day out.
Food-wise, the St Regis has launched a new Sunday affair: the Umi Social Brunch at Catch, starting October 18 from 12.30pm to 4pm. Expect Japanese-inspired dishes with an interactive twist — there's an oyster trolley, sushi and seafood stations, signature cocktails, live calligraphy and a DJ, all with beachfront views. Packages run from Dhs375 for soft drinks to Dhs675 with champagne.
Over at The Galleria Al Maryah Island, L'ETO's Siesta Hour runs Monday to Saturday, 3.30pm to 7.30pm, pairing Mediterranean tapas with genuinely reasonably priced drinks — cocktails from Dhs40, wines from Dhs30 a glass. The Talamanca Fizz (hibiscus limoncello, bergamot, prosecco) is the one to order.
If German flavours are more your thing, The Club Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island is hosting an Oktoberfest over two nights, October 16 and 17, from 7pm to 10pm. For Dhs280 per person you get communal tables, traditional German dishes and free-flowing selected German beers, with live music from the Bavarian Camels.
Afternoon tea fans have a tight window: the Four Seasons' floral afternoon tea at Al Meylas Lounge runs daily 3pm to 7pm but ends October 23, so it's a now-or-next-year situation.
There's also a meaningful option on the list. On Sunday, October 18, Yas Bay Waterfront hosts the Pink Caravan "Choose You Today" breast cancer awareness event from 10am to 4pm, offering free clinical breast examinations and select mammograms, with giveaways for the first 100 participants.
It's a solid snapshot of how varied Abu Dhabi's weekend offering has become — world-class art on Saadiyat, hotel brunch culture, and community events on Yas Island all within a short drive of each other. For visitors, it's a decent template for a city break: museum in the morning, sundowners on Al Maryah Island, brunch to recover on Sunday.
