Forget the old image of a cruise spa as a few treatment rooms tucked by the pool. On the latest ultra-luxury ships, wellness is the headline act, with whole decks given over to saunas, salt caves, sound pods and padel courts.

The numbers behind the shift are striking: wellness is already a trillion-dollar industry, projected to hit US$9.8 trillion by 2029, and the luxury cruise sector is chasing its share. Scenic's two 228-guest Discovery Yachts, Scenic Eclipse I (2019) and Eclipse II (2023), each carry a 550 sqm Senses Spa with a salt therapy lounge, infrared and Finnish saunas, cold plunge and heated vitality pools, and a dedicated yoga and Pilates studio. The line also runs dedicated Scenic Spa Voyages between April 2027 and November 2028 — mostly sea-day repositioning trips built around tailored wellness programs and healthy cooking classes.

Regent Seven Seas is going bigger still. Seven Seas Prestige, the first of a new class, departs on her maiden voyage from Barcelona to Miami this December with 818 guests and a fleet-first salt room inside its largest-ever Serene Spa & Wellness centre. There's a 558 sqm Technogym-equipped fitness centre, a snow room, hydrotherapy pool and heated loungers in the thermal suite, plus a 24-hour Solara Sports Deck with padel, pickleball, bocce and an 18-hole putting green. Top-suite guests get a private gym — another first for the line.

Explora Journeys' Explora III, which entered service in July 2026, merges spa and fitness into a single 700-plus sqm Ocean Wellness space for the first time, with 11 treatment rooms, a salt cave, an 'ice fall' and a new Sava Sound Pod using vibroacoustic therapy for stress relief and recovery. Oceania's Allura takes wellness ashore too, with wellness-themed excursions such as the Ibusuki black sand baths in Kagoshima, Japan, alongside its Aquamar Spa terrace and daily complimentary fitness classes.

Silversea plays it differently with Otium, a concept inspired by ancient Roman indulgence rather than restriction — think caviar, truffles and Champagne delivered to your 123 sqm Otium Suite's wraparound balcony hot tub, cashmere throws included. The spa itself is more conventional: thermal suite, indoor pool, sauna and eight treatment rooms on both Silver Nova and Silver Ray.

For travellers, the takeaway is that a spa-focused holiday no longer requires a retreat in the mountains. If a sea day spent alternating between a salt room, a sound bath and a pickleball match sounds like your kind of trip, there's now a ship built precisely for that — just check whether the wellness programming is a dedicated voyage theme or part of the standard offering before you book.
