As warmer winters squeeze the ski industry, picking a resort with dependable snow has become a serious decision rather than a gamble. UK operator Inghams Ski has attempted to settle the question with data, ranking 150 northern hemisphere resorts on a bespoke "Reliable Ski Score" — and backing it with a promise: if fewer than 25% of runs are open when you arrive at one of its listed destinations, it will move you to a nearby resort with better conditions for free.

The scoring weights the share of lifts and slopes running in the core season most heavily (35%), followed by how often base-station snow hits 30cm or more (25%), year-to-year consistency (20%), the gap between an average and the worst recent season (12%), and average snow depth on the mountain (8%). COVID seasons were excluded from the seven-year analysis.

Italy takes the crown. Pontedilegno-Tonale, formerly known as Adamello Ski, topped the list with a score of 93.1/100. Sitting between the Adamello-Presanella peaks in northern Italy, it offers what Inghams calls some of the most varied skiing in the Alps.

France dominates the rest of the table with exactly half of the top 20. Les Arcs (third), Les Trois Vallées (fourth) and Alpe d'Huez (fifth) lead the French contingent. Les Trois Vallées is one of the largest ski areas on earth, with 600km of pistes and 85% of its terrain above 1,800m — it scored a perfect 100 on snow adequacy. Les Arcs suits freestyle skiers as much as snow-hunters, while Alpe d'Huez pairs roughly 300 days of sunshine a year with the Pic Blanc Glacier at 3,300m, giving it a reputation for powder plus bluebird days.

Austria fills six spots, including three in the top ten. Obertauern, second overall, is known for long seasons stretching from late November into May, sweeping views and hotels that are almost entirely ski-in/ski-out. Kitzsteinhorn (sixth) and Filzmoos (seventh) round out the Austrian presence. Between them, France and Austria account for 80% of the top 20.

For anyone booking a ski trip this winter, the message is simple: altitude, glacier access and proven consistency matter more than reputation alone. High resorts like Pontedilegno-Tonale, Obertauern and the Trois Vallées are the safest bets for a white week — and with operators now staking free resort swaps on it, there's less risk in locking in dates early.
