Some bottles tell a story. The Macallan's new Carta Nautica Collection tells one in shipping miles: its oak casks have crossed the Atlantic before a single drop is poured.
The series takes its name from the Spanish for 'nautical chart', and it breaks with the sherry-cask orthodoxy the Speyside distillery is famous for. Each whisky starts in sherry-seasoned oak from Jerez, Spain, then sails to North America to finish in casks that previously held bourbon, before landing at The Macallan Estate in Speyside for its final stage. The idea, according to lead whisky maker Euan Kennedy, is to blend characters shaped by different continents and climates into something that manages to be both contrasting and harmonious.
There are two releases, and how you get one depends on where you're standing. Carta Nautica Distilled in 1987 is the first of a new line of limited vintage editions, sold only through The Macallan Estate Boutique and select Macallan Boutiques worldwide. It spends a mighty 38 years in cask and comes out at 45.2% ABV, with creamy vanilla and caramelized peach up front, moving into antique oak, florals, nectarine, pineapple and a whisper of soft leather. The Carta Nautica 20 Years Old, at 42% ABV, is a duty-free exclusive aimed at Global Travel Retail, and leans tropical: orange peel and vanilla, then pineapple, mango and apricot conserve, finishing on wood spice and sultanas.
Even the packaging stays on theme. Each bottle arrives in a sculptural wooden case with wave-like grooves, and inside an open-frame box sits alongside a paper-based artwork by American artist Amy Genser, layered in blues and turquoise that nod to the ocean and shoreline. Collector-minded buyers will note that the presentation is doing as much work as the liquid.
For travellers, the practical hook is the channel split. If you want the 20 Year Old, the airport is your friend — it's only sold in Global Travel Retail, so a long-haul departure could be your best shot at a bottle. If it's the 1987 vintage you're after, that means a pilgrimage to the Estate Boutique in Speyside, in Scotland's whisky heartland, or one of a handful of Macallan Boutiques in major cities. Either way, this is a release built for people who plan trips around what's in the glass: whisky tourists, luxury collectors and anyone who fancies tasting an Atlantic crossing without leaving the bar.
And if Speyside is the draw, it pairs neatly with the wider region — distillery trails along the River Spey, the Malt Whisky Trail, and easy detours to the Cairngorms. Just don't expect the 38-year-old to linger on shelves.
