A quick drive south of Cedar Rapids, Tiffin has quietly become the fastest-growing town in Johnson County. Its population has jumped around 66% since 2020, and with just under 8,000 residents today, projections say it could pass 12,000 within a few years. For travellers, that growth means a small town gaining amenities fast while keeping its laid-back, small-town feel.
The outdoors is the main draw. Tiffin City Park anchors the community with baseball and soccer fields, room for dogs to run, and a stretch of the Clear Creek trail — a wide paved path running about eight miles from Iowa City alongside the creek. Locals flag it as good for walking and biking, with spring wildflowers adding colour. Cross the train tracks and keep going and you reach the Clear Creek Area, an 87-acre recreation spot shaded by tall trees and songbird-filled in season, with dedicated archery and hunting spaces.
Water lovers have options too. About 20 minutes by car, nature preserves along the Iowa River rank among the Midwest's favourite tubing spots. Nearby, Waterworks Prairie Park offers ponds and prairie trails, and Devonian Fossil Gorge lets you walk among fossil formations millions of years old — an unusual roadside attraction that costs nothing to explore.
Back downtown, Tiffin leans hard into sweet treats. Jon's Ice Cream Store has been serving since 1980 and opens daily until 9 p.m., pairing sundaes and fresh waffle cones with comfort food like corn dogs, grilled cheese and burgers. Its manager described the place as nostalgic and family-oriented — a small-town spot where people come to sit and linger. Fifteen minutes' walk away, Deja Brew Coffee House & Bakery pours German chocolate and cookie butter lattes, and its pastry case gets particular praise for jumbo cinnamon rolls.
Tiffin works as a day trip or a low-key stop on a wider Midwest loop. North Liberty, with its lake views, is five miles east, and Kalona — a town with old-school German character — sits about 30 minutes south. For an overnight stay, quaint options like the Belmont Hill Victorian Bed & Breakfast in Cedar Rapids are within easy reach. With Eastern Iowa Airport just 20 minutes away, it's an easy add-on for anyone flying into the region.
