One IHG loyalist burned 1.3 million points on 62 hotel nights in a single year, and still averaged 0.88 cents of value per point — well above the 0.6 cents The Points Guy currently values them at. The takeaway: IHG One Rewards points can go a long way, but only if you know all the ways to earn them.

The obvious route is staying at IHG hotels — that's Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, Kimpton, InterContinental and more. Qualifying rates booked directly with IHG earn 10 points per dollar at most brands, 5 points per dollar at extended-stay properties like Staybridge and Candlewood, and 3 points per dollar at IHG Army Hotels. Food and drink charged to your room usually counts too. Book through an unofficial online travel agency and you'll earn nothing, so always go direct, via the app, or through an authorized agent.

Elite status supercharges this. Silver Elite adds a 20% bonus on stay points, Gold 40%, Platinum 60% and Diamond a full 100%. A Diamond member paying $200 a night for three nights at a Kimpton walks away with 12,000 points instead of 6,000 — worth roughly $72 at TPG's valuations, before any promotions or card spend.

If you're chasing status or points, a few levers help. You can buy up to 5,000 elite qualifying points per night via "Add Extras" when booking a paid stay, with no annual cap — handy if you've maxed out outright point purchases. And from 20 nights a year onwards, Milestone Rewards are handed out every 10 nights; the points options range from 5,000 points at the 20- and 30-night tiers up to 20,000 at 40 and 70 nights. Just remember to register for IHG's bonus promotions before your stay, and note that multipliers usually apply to base earnings only, not your elite bonus.

For most people, though, the easiest engine is a cobranded IHG credit card. The top card currently offers 200,000 bonus points after $5,000 of spend in three months, plus 12 points per dollar at IHG hotels and 6 points per dollar on travel and dining (rates update from January 1, 2027). Mid-tier cards earn 10 points per dollar at IHG hotels and 5 points on groceries, gas, direct airline bookings, car rentals and dining. Better still, most of these cards include the fourth-night-free perk on award bookings — a benefit the writer says they used 13 times in a year. The no-annual-fee card only unlocks it from 2027 if you spend $5,000 on the card in a calendar year.

One thing to skip: transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards or Bilt points to IHG at 1:1. You'd need to redeem at over 2 cents per point to break even, which is a stretch when IHG award pricing often sits well below that.

For anyone with regular IHG stays on the horizon — a road trip, a city break, an extended stay — combining direct bookings, registered promotions, elite bonuses and card spend can quietly build a free-stay fund. As the author's 62 free nights show, the maths can work in your favour if you stack it deliberately. Who it's for: points hobbyists and frequent IHC guests; casual travellers can still benefit from a single cobranded card and the fourth-night-free perk.
