Skip the rooftop bar markup: one of the best vantage points in downtown Vancouver costs nothing and doesn't even need a reservation. The Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library at 350 West Georgia St. has a multi-level rooftop patio that's open every day of the year, rain or shine.
The top draws start on Level 9, home to the Phillips, Hager and North Garden — named for city benefactors Art Phillips, Bob Hager and Rudy North, with the entry honouring a fourth founding partner, Dick Bradshaw. It's planted with drought-resistant local greenery: arbutus hedge, honeysuckle, white roses, lavender and a coral bark maple, plus 52 solar panels along the roof's exterior.
One floor down, Level 8 has two open terraces. The north one faces the North Shore Mountains — the money shot, especially when the peaks get their first snow — while the south terrace connects to the RBC Lounge, a handy picnic spot. There's also an enclosed pocket garden, the Kermani Family Garden, visible from the Pat Graham Reading Room if the weather turns.
Opening hours vary by day: 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The library asks visitors not to smoke anywhere on the roof and to keep photos considerate of people actually trying to read.
Why bother? Autumn is arguably the best window — colourful foliage in the garden below and snowy mountains across the water — but it works year-round as a free hangout with a skyline view. Bring a coffee and a snack, grab a bench, and you've got the kind of elevated city hangout that normally comes with a drink minimum. It's a genuinely good pick for budget travellers, a rainy-day backup, or anyone who'd rather spend happy-hour money elsewhere.
