Vietnam has been named the fourth-hottest autumn destination for 2026 in a new Lonely Planet ranking, beaten only by Japan, Italy and Thailand. The list of 15 destinations wasn't based on editorial whim: Lonely Planet measured the jump in guidebook purchases between 20 August and 20 September, essentially tracking where its own readers are planning to go this autumn.
Why Vietnam? The publisher points to the sheer variety packed into one country, plus reliably good weather in the north at this time of year. Autumn in Hanoi means mild temperatures that make wandering the Old Quarter's narrow streets and stopping for bowls of pho an easy pleasure, in a city with over a thousand years of history behind it.
Head east and Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh province benefits from the season too. The UNESCO-listed bay, with its limestone karsts rising out of green water, is far more pleasant to explore by boat or kayak once the summer heat and crowds ease off.
For many travellers, though, the autumn highlight will be the rice harvest in the northern mountains. In Sa Pa and Ha Giang, the terraced fields turn a dramatic gold in September and October, and the mountain roads that link them are among the most scenic drives in Southeast Asia. Homestays with local ethnic communities are a big part of the appeal here.
The south plays by different rules — it's warmer and still sees some rain, but it works well for city and coast. Ho Chi Minh City's street food scene hums year-round, and cycling the countryside around Hội An, the beautifully preserved old trading town, is a relaxed way to take in rural life between downpours.
Lonely Planet's top three each got their nod for good reason: Japan for foliage and food, Italy for seasonal cuisine and heritage, Thailand for its weather window at the tail end of the rainy season and its festivals. South America rounded out the top five. But Vietnam's fourth-place finish is arguably the more actionable one for autumn planners — flights are cheaper than peak season, the north is at its best, and you can combine mountains, a heritage bay and beach towns in a single two-week trip without ever feeling rushed.
If you've been sitting on a Vietnam trip, the message from thousands of fellow guidebook buyers is clear: this autumn is the moment.
