The Cape Winelands isn't short of tasting rooms, but Lanzerac Wine Estate in Stellenbosch has opened something you won't find at the neighbouring cellars: a dedicated fine-water tasting. The Library at Lanzerac, working with The Fine Water Company, is described by the estate as South Africa's first tasting room devoted entirely to water — and yes, a certified water sommelier is involved.

The concept works a lot like a wine flight. Instead of grape varieties and tannins, you're guided through the mineral makeup, carbonation and mouthfeel of six waters — three still and three sparkling. A water sommelier named Nico Pieterse leads the session, explaining how each water picks up its character from the rock and soil it filters through. Calcium, magnesium and sodium all shape the flavour, and carbonation changes everything from the feel of the bubbles to how the water lands on your tongue.

The line-up is genuinely international. Expect ISKLD from Denmark, Perlage from Poland, Socosani from Peru and Jermuk from Armenia, alongside South Africa's own Mountain Falls. Tasted side by side, the differences become surprisingly obvious — some read light and crisp, others fuller or faintly salty, with a mineral finish that lingers.

It's an easy addition to a Winelands day out, especially if someone in your group doesn't drink, you've done one cellar too many, or you're simply curious. Sessions cost R350 per person and reservations are essential — book through Lanzerac's website and confirm details before you go, as prices and availability can shift. The estate sits on Lanzerac Road in Stellenbosch, an easy drive from Cape Town, so you can pair the water flight with the estate's usual wine and food offerings in the same visit.
