December is peak season in South Africa, and peak season means peak prices — especially in the usual coastal big-hitters. But a look at December 2026 accommodation and flight data suggests families can still get a proper beach holiday without paying Durban or Cape Town rates, if they pick the right town.
Gqeberha is the standout for Gauteng families. A two-week December trip for four — flights from OR Tambo plus 14 nights of accommodation — came in at roughly R24 600 all-in, or about R439 per person per night. Flights on that route were also notably cheaper than comparable Johannesburg flights to Durban and Cape Town in the same comparison, which partly offsets the longer distance. For a 14-night stay, that maths is hard to argue with.
Just up the road, Jeffrey's Bay offers a surf-town beach holiday at more forgiving prices than Garden Route hotspots. Typical nightly rates sit around R1 204, with a spread from roughly R806 to R2 006 — not cheap across the board, but with far more choice at the lower end than a luxury resort town. And much of what J-Bay is about (beaches, waves, coastal walks) costs nothing extra.
KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast remains the value play for anyone in the province. Towns like Margate, Umzumbe, Scottburgh, Pennington and Port Edward lean heavily on self-catering and budget stays, so families can cook rather than restaurant their way through the holiday. Recent research found beds in Umzumbe from about R300 per person per night, four-person bungalows from around R1 000 a night, and Port Edward options from roughly R500 outside peak weeks. Being drivable from Durban and Pietermaritzburg removes the airfare entirely.
On the West Coast, St Helena Bay is a middle path for those who'd otherwise default to Cape Town. December nightly rates average about R1 584 (versus R1 287 in November), ranging from roughly R1 089 to R2 322. Not a bargain — but gentler than the premium coastal markets.
One big caveat applies everywhere: December prices are slippery. An August 2026 analysis of more than 5 000 properties found nearly a third of those listing both September and December rates had bumped their cheapest December rate, with a median increase of 22.2%. Even a price you can see online today can move, and an early-December bargain may mask steep Christmas and New Year rates. When you travel matters almost as much as where.
For South African families planning a summer break, the takeaway is simple: look past the marquee destinations, price the whole trip (flights plus stay) rather than nightly rates, and book with an eye on exactly which week you're committing to. Story via The South African Travel.
