Two hours from Cape Town, the little village of Stanford has become the base for a sweet weekend itinerary: a honey route through the Overberg that links bee farms, cheese makers, fynbos walks and country roads. The idea is simple — follow what the bees feed on, and you end up seeing the whole landscape.
Day one starts at the Overberg Honey Company's Stanford shop, which sells raw South African honey and bee products (it also has branches in Hermanus and Elgin). The main event, though, is out in the Stanford Valley at Honeybee Heroes on Willowdale Farm, where more than 100 hives host appointment-only beekeeping experiences. You suit up, get close to the hives, learn the basics, and finish with a tasting. Because honey changes flavour with whatever the bees have been foraging, the tasting doubles as a lesson in local vegetation — much of it the fynbos the Cape is famous for.
Lunch is a farm-style affair: Klein River Cheese stocks its own cheeses alongside charcuterie, jams and crackers, ideal for a picnic. Afterwards, the Stanford Wandelpad follows the Klein River for an easy 45-minute walk with birdlife and mountain views. Overnight options range from village cottages to farm stays in the Klein River Valley.
Day two is deliberately unhurried. Breakfast at Ou Meul Bakery, or the Saturday market if your timing is right (there's also a monthly Sunset Market on selected Friday evenings), then a slow drive through farmland and mountains with stops at farm stalls. If you're heading back towards Cape Town, route through Elgin — an apple-orchard valley with cool-climate farm stalls and the Elgin Railway Market. The final stop is the Overberg Honey Co shop near the market, stocking raw honey plus beeswax and propolis products, so you can take the Overberg home in a jar.
Why it matters: this is a low-effort, high-reward countryside escape that works for couples, families and anyone tired of over-scheduled trips. The whole thing fits in two days and one night, and the best strategy is to under-plan rather than over-plan. Book Honeybee Heroes in advance, check producer opening times if you're travelling on a Sunday or public holiday, and pack walking shoes, sun protection and a cooler bag for cheese and produce. The flowers feed the bees, the bees pollinate the fynbos, and you get to eat and walk your way through both.
