Air Canada's Toronto Pearson hub is undergoing a shake-up for 2026. The country's largest carrier, which handles roughly 40-50% of traffic at YYZ, has quietly dropped or confirmed the end of nine nonstop routes from the city — and balanced the books with a handful of new sun and Europe launches.

The US cuts are the headline news. Flights to New York JFK, which were meant to return on October 25, have been scrubbed from the schedule entirely. It's the second time Air Canada has abandoned the airport: it first dropped JFK in 2016, revived it in 2023, and is now exiting again. The move stings less than it sounds — the airline operates up to 34 daily flights to the New York area via LaGuardia and Newark. Also gone is Charleston, South Carolina, launched in March 2024 but never able to fill seats: US DOT data shows an average load factor of just 66.5%, with no month topping 70%. The route ends in September 2026.

The bigger story is Cuba. When Havana warned airlines in February that Jet A-1 fuel would no longer be commercially available at island airports, Air Canada suspended all Cuba flights and ran empty southbound planes to bring home around 3,000 stranded Canadians. What was framed as a short disruption stretched on — resumption was postponed indefinitely in June, and the Toronto routes to Cayo Coco, Varadero, Holguín and Santa Clara are now formally ended as of February 2026. WestJet and Air Transat initially tried workarounds but eventually followed suit.

Domestic and Mexican routes are affected too. Yellowknife ends in August 2026 on commercial grounds, northern Ontario's North Bay goes in January, and Zihuatanejo is off the map from April. Overall, Air Canada's capacity on US routes has fallen by roughly 10% over the past two years amid Canada-US trade and diplomatic tensions, according to reporting by the Financial Post.

It's not all shrinking. Toronto remains the airline's busiest hub, with around 1,564 departures in a typical mid-November week, and the network is growing in sunnier directions. From October 25, a twice-weekly A321XLR service starts to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. November brings two weekly flights to Mérida, Mexico, and December adds weekly services to Guatemala City, Quito and Roatán in Honduras. For summer 2026, the airline has also announced Oslo, Shannon and Nice from Toronto.

For travellers, the practical takeaway is to double-check any booked Air Canada itinerary touching Cuba, small northern Canadian communities or JFK for 2026 — some of these flights simply won't operate. On the flip side, anyone in southern and central Ontario looking for less obvious winter getaways now has direct options well beyond the usual Cancún-and-Varadero circuit: volcanic Canary Islands beaches, Yucatán food cities, high-altitude Quito and diving-friendly Roatán are all reachable nonstop from Pearson this winter.
