Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines have expanded their combined Atmos Rewards loyalty program with four new themed 'communities' — mini clubs inside the program that unlock bonus points, discounts and freebies. Add the two long-standing resident programs and there are now six in total, and every member can (and probably should) join one.
The newcomers, live since Oct. 1, are Global Locals for frequent international flyers, Families on the Go for parents flying with kids, Culinary Journeys for food-focused travellers, and Active Escapes for outdoor-adventure types. Membership is free, open to any Atmos Rewards member, though you can only belong to one community at a time — switching is allowed once per year. Each comes with challenges that hand out bonus points and status points, plus targeted flight deals.
Some of the perks are genuinely useful. Families on the Go returns 20% of your points when you book award flights for children aged 12 or under, and offers bonus points on flights to family destinations like Orlando, San Diego, Cancun, Tokyo and New York. Global Locals is likely the pick for status chasers: 10% extra status points on international flights (including awards), plus one status point per 25 points transferred in from partners like Bilt — so moving 50,000 points gets you 2,000 status points, a tenth of the way to Silver.
Culinary Journeys lets you stack up to 10,000 bonus points by flying to food cities such as New York, London, Tokyo and Austin, while Active Escapes rewards trips to places like Bozeman, Kalispell, Palm Springs and Jackson Hole — with Nadi in Fiji a surprise addition. Rewards grow the more featured cities you tick off.
Meanwhile, the two original communities got upgrades too. Club 49, for Alaska residents, includes two free checked bags on flights to or from the state (three within it), two annual 30% last-minute 'Travel Now' discounts, and a flat $49 cargo shipping deal for up to 100 pounds. Huaka'i by Hawaiian, for Hawaii residents, adds 50% bonus points on inter-island flights from Jan. 1, 2027, two free checked bags on those hops (surfboards and golf bags included) and a quarterly 10% fare discount code.
Why should a traveller care? Because there's no downside: joining costs nothing and every community offers something back. If you live in Alaska or Hawaii, the resident programs are obvious. Elsewhere, Global Locals and Families on the Go look like the strongest value depending on whether you chase status or fly with kids. The one catch is that the annual switch limit means it's worth matching your pick to your actual 2027 travel plans before you commit — and pairing it with the new choice accrual option, which lets you decide how points and status accrue next year.
