Travelling by train is always better with company, and Amtrak has just made that argument a lot cheaper. Its Twice as Nice Sale is back, and for a limited window it hands you a second First-Class Roomette ticket at no extra cost — essentially two people travelling in a private cabin for the price of one.

The deal applies to bookings made before October 31, 2026, for journeys taken between November 1, 2026 and January 31, 2027. You'll need to book through Amtrak's promotion page and enter the promo code C102 at checkout. Crucially, the free companion can't be bolted on later: both travellers must be on the same itinerary and ticketed together in a single order.

So what does a First-Class Roomette actually get you? Think of it as a tiny hotel room on rails. The cabin has two seats that convert into beds at night, an oversized window for scenery-watching, and pillows, towels and linens provided. Meals are included, a dedicated room attendant looks after your cabin, and you get priority boarding. At major stations, Roomette passengers can also use Amtrak's Metropolitan Lounges — a genuinely useful perk if you're starting from a big hub like Chicago or Washington and want somewhere comfortable to wait. Bathrooms and showers are shared, which is the main trade-off versus the larger bedroom classes.

One route is excluded: the southbound Auto Train (service S3), which carries cars and passengers between the Washington area and Florida. Everything else in the network qualifies. But check your dates carefully, because the blackout list is long and hits exactly when you'd most want to ride. Travel is blocked November 18-24 and November 27-30, 2026 (Thanksgiving week and weekend), December 17-22, 2026, and December 26 through January 2 — the heart of the holiday rush. In practice, that pushes this deal towards early November, early December, or January trips, which can actually be a lovely time to see the country by rail with fewer crowds on board.

Who should jump on this? Anyone who has been eyeing a long-haul Amtrak route — the Coast Starlight along the Pacific, the California Zephyr through the Rockies, the Crescent to New Orleans — and baulked at the price of two sleeper tickets. Roomettes are comfortably Amtrak's most expensive tier, so cutting the fare in half for a pair changes the maths considerably. Solo travellers won't benefit here; the offer only works with a second person on the same booking.

If it sounds appealing, book sooner rather than later. These sale windows tend to fill on the most scenic and popular departures first, and the booking deadline of October 31, 2026 is fixed.
