Seventeen miles northwest of Minneapolis sits Maple Grove, a city that punches well above its weight for a day trip or an easy overnight. It grew up around dense maple groves that once drew settlers farming and making syrup, and today it blends seven lakes, a sprawling open-air shopping district and a restaurant scene dense enough that the city bills itself as the Restaurant Capital of Minnesota — around 150 eateries at last count.

Start outdoors. Fish Lake Regional Park is the headliner: a 238-acre lake with strikingly blue water on clear days, three miles of trails, swimming in summer and canoe or kayak rentals. Eagle Lake Regional Park, on the Plymouth border, adds fishing, mountain biking and golf, plus a 1.8-mile trail that passes a wooden footbridge where you might spot ospreys diving for fish. Families gravitate to Weaver Lake Community Park, an 80-acre space with a sandy beach on a 152-acre lake, playgrounds and picnic spots.

When you're hungry, plan strategically. Kingdom Coffee roasts in-house and does solid breakfast sandwiches, while Tous les Jours, a French-Asian bakery, draws crowds for ube tea lattes, mango cream croissants and curry croquettes. Northern Taphouse handles the casual side with smash burgers, wings and pretzel bites, and Granite City Brewery pours seasonal beers. For something more polished, Grackle's scratch kitchen turns out dishes like peanut papaya salad and chimichurri steak in a modern setting — locals call it a hidden gem.

Shopping splits between two areas. The Main Street strip has boutiques and home goods store Mama's Happy along brick sidewalks with benches and curved lampposts; in summer it hosts Chalkfest, a free two-day art festival, with concerts at nearby Town Green park. The bigger draw is the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes, an open-air mall styled like a small village, complete with hanging flower baskets, fountains and winter fire pits. More than 60 stores range from Gap, H&M, Lululemon and Ulta to local favorites like GoodThings (Minnesota merch, kitchen gadgets, jewelry) and Grey Duck Games & Toys.

Why it matters: Maple Grove is an easy add-on to a Twin Cities trip. It sits at the junction of Interstates 94, 494 and Highway 610, and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport — previously rated North America's best — is a straightforward drive away. If you stay over, Staybridge Suites includes breakfast and a gym, while Holiday Inn & Suites offers kitchenettes and weekend access to an indoor water park. Winter has its own appeal too, when the shopping centers light up with holiday displays and fire pits warm the walkways. It's a low-effort, high-reward detour for travellers who want lakes, a proper meal and a bit of retail therapy without heading into downtown Minneapolis.
