Bangkok's grande dame of Thai luxury has had a serious glow-up. The Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel, a landmark on the city's hotel scene since 1983, has completed a USD$50 million transformation that reimagines all of its rooms, suites and villas while carefully protecting the artwork that made the place famous.
The hotel first opened more than four decades ago, designed by architect George Wimberley, and quickly became one of the properties that put Bangkok on Asia's luxury map. Its centrepiece has always been the lobby: a 100-metre hand-painted mural by Paiboon Suwannakudt, widely regarded as Thailand's greatest muralist, painted for the 200th anniversary of the current reigning dynasty. Above it, 19 ceiling panels depict the "Heavens in Thai Thought." In a renovation that could easily have bulldozed the past, the mural has been meticulously preserved as a tribute to the artist.
Everything else has been reworked under the theme "Transformed. Timeless. Thai." All 335 rooms and suites now feature warm teak, handcrafted detailing, silk accents and a residential colour palette, with bathrooms upgraded to marble finishes and bespoke vanities. New additions include the Anantara Garden Pool Suites and Villas — private-pool hideaways set in tropical gardens in the middle of the city — and a two-bedroom Jim Thompson Explorer Suite created with the legendary Thai silk house, styled like a polished-teak Thai summer home with a private library and open-plan living space.
The wellness offering has expanded dramatically too. The Anantara Spa has been completely overhauled, and the new Siam Sports Club brings a Technogym fitness centre, Pilates studio, Muay Thai ring, rock-climbing wall and outdoor training zone. Business travellers aren't forgotten: the Grand Ballroom and meeting spaces have been redesigned with current event tech, positioning the hotel for the luxury conference and wedding market.
Why should this matter to you? Bangkok has no shortage of five-star openings, but few combine genuine heritage with fully modern facilities. If you've stayed at the Anantara Siam before, this is effectively a new hotel with the same soul — and if you haven't, the preserved mural alone makes the lobby worth lingering in. The Garden Pool Suites are the headline grabber for couples, while families get two-bedroom options and the sports club keeps active travellers happy without leaving the property.
