Rooftop pools usually pack it in when the temperature drops. Not at Freestyle Social Club, on the top floor of Hotel Arts in downtown Calgary, where the heated pool runs every day of the year. When summer ends, an inflatable roof goes over the water, turning the open-air deck into a cosy indoor space — so you can float around while snow piles up outside.
You don't need to be a guest at Hotel Arts either. Day access costs $15 per person, though it's first-come, first-served, so timing matters on busy days. The fee applies whether you're swimming or just settling in on the pool deck, and prices can shift on event days.
The pool is only part of the draw. Freestyle is set up as a lounge for lingering rather than a quick pit stop, with a full menu covering breakfast, snacks and bigger plates, plus drinks. A daily Social Hour runs from 3 to 6 p.m., with rotating food and drink deals through the week. If you'd rather swing a club than do a lap, there are two Foresight golf simulators — full rounds, practice sessions or interactive games — renting from $45 an hour in 30-minute increments. Hotel guests get half off simulator bookings through the front desk.
Practical stuff: the address is 119 12th Ave. SW, and hours are 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, with a midnight close on Friday and Saturday. Drivers get free underground parking via 13th Avenue SW, plus paid lots off 12th Avenue. On transit, the Victoria Park/Stampede CTrain station is about a seven-minute walk away, with bus stops along 1st Street SW.
A few house rules to note. No outside food or drink, no glassware near the pool, no diving, jumping or running, and no drinks in the water. Swimwear is fine in the Poolside area, but throw on proper clothes and shoes to move through the hotel's public spaces. Both the pool and golf simulators can be booked online ahead of time, which is worth doing if you're set on a specific slot.
For travellers, this is a genuinely useful winter find. Calgary gets seriously cold, and the idea of a rooftop swim usually dies around September. Here, a $15 day pass buys you warm water, skyline views and a lounge to hole up in — a solid way to break up a day of sightseeing or thaw out after skating or skiing nearby. It also works as a low-key evening plan if the golf simulator and Social Hour appeal more than the water. Just remember the roof means your summer skyline photo ops will be through a cover rather than open sky.
