Original art for the price of a decent dinner out? That's the pitch behind Supermarché de l'Art, a one-day art market running at cSPACE Marda Loop in southwest Calgary on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free, no registration needed — you can just walk in and start browsing.

The event is organised by S.M.Art, a local non-profit with a simple mission: make buying original art less intimidating and a lot more affordable. Its first market launched in November 2025, and this second edition promises more than 1,500 pieces from around 50 Calgary artists, both francophone and anglophone. Expect paintings, drawings, photographs and illustrations, with prices capped at $300 and starting as low as $30 — a range that covers everything from a first piece for a rental wall to something more substantial.

One detail sets the format apart from a typical gallery show: instead of hanging works on walls, the organisers stack the art in boxes that visitors flip through. It turns browsing into a rummage-style treasure hunt, and because S.M.Art encourages the artists themselves to attend, there's a good chance you'll end up chatting with the person who made whatever you buy.

The venue is the Studio Theatre at cSPACE Marda Loop, 1721 29th Ave. SW. Free parking sits on the north side of the building, plus free street parking along 29th and 30th Avenue. Marda Loop is one of Calgary's more walkable neighbourhoods, so it's easy to pair the market with coffee or lunch on the same strip.

For travellers, this is the kind of event worth timing a trip around if you're in Alberta in early November. Souvenirs that are actually good — original, local, handmade — are rare, and here you can meet the maker and pay $30 for it. If you're flying home with a suitcase, a small framed print or unframed canvas is easier to pack than you'd think. And even if you're not buying, free entry makes it a low-effort cultural stop on a weekend in the city.
