Flying between the Gulf and Australia is about to get noticeably easier. Etihad Airways will bump its Abu Dhabi–Sydney route up to two flights a day from December 2026, moving from the current 10 weekly services to a full 14.
Every flight on the route will be operated by the Airbus A350-1000, Etihad's long-haul flagship, which works out to more than 5,000 seats in each direction every week. For anyone heading to Australia — or connecting onwards from there — that means more choice over when you fly and a better chance of scoring the dates and fare you actually want.
The timetable gives you two genuinely different options out of Abu Dhabi. If you like a daylight departure, flight EY450 leaves at 9.55am and lands in Sydney at 6.30am the next morning — handy for waking up in Australia ready to start the day. Prefer to sleep through the flight? EY454 departs at 9.05pm and arrives in Sydney at 5.45pm the following day.
Coming back, there are two evening departures from Sydney to choose from, at 4.50pm and 9.30pm. Depending on which one you pick, you'll be back in Abu Dhabi either shortly after midnight or around 5am — useful if you've got a connecting flight onwards to Europe, the UK or elsewhere in the Middle East.
There's also a perk worth knowing about if Australia is part of a bigger trip. Etihad's Abu Dhabi Stopover programme lets eligible passengers add a complimentary one- or two-night hotel stay in the UAE capital to their booking. Given Abu Dhabi's mix of beaches, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island and a fast-growing food scene, a free stopover is a genuinely good way to break up what is otherwise a very long haul.
Why does this matter for travellers? The Australia route from the Gulf has become one of the most competitive long-haul corridors going, and extra frequency usually means sharper prices and easier award availability. If you're planning an Australian summer trip — think December through February, which is peak season Down Under — the timing of this expansion lines up neatly with when you'd want to book. It also gives UAE-based travellers and the large Australian expat community in the Emirates more flexibility around Christmas and New Year, when seats are hardest to find.
The increased service is scheduled to begin in December 2026, so there's time to plan — but if you've got an Australia trip on the horizon for late 2026 or 2027, the twice-daily Sydney schedule is one to keep an eye on when fares go on sale.
